A very large and magnificent carved oak mantel clock. The case is carved from a single block of oak and shows two dwarfs in front of an oak tree. The dwarfs are hiding treasure in the tree, while below in a hollowed out nook sits an owl. The time piece hangs from the branches of the tree by a belt strap. The whole subject is most unusual and most likely tells a story from northern European folklore. The carving is of the highest quality and the colour and patina is also wonderful. The timepiece is a simple french movement and does not strike. The whole is in excellent condition, with only minor chips around the winding hole on the clock face. C.1890
