    Antique Clarice Cliff - Chestnut Pattern Vase

    Beautifully presented Ovoid style vase with 'Chestnut' pattern (circa 1930's).

     
    Born in Tunstall in January 1899, Clarice Cliff was to become one of the leading 20th century ceramist. Clarice is well known for her bold designs and colours.
     
    Clarice start working at aged 13 as an enameller and joined A.J Wilkinson’s Royal Staffordshire pottery when she was 17, it was here that her ability to draw was discovered. Burslem School of Arts soon beckoned (1924-1925) and in 1927 she studied at the Royal College of Art.
     
    This was short lived because after a few months Clarice setup a small studio in the Wilkinson Newport Pottery where the famous 'Bizarre' wares was launched in 1927. The factory employed a workforce of a 1000 people with many young boys and girls being trained in the decorating shops, producing new shapes and designs.
     
    Clarice retired after her husband died in 1963 and the factory was sold in 1964 ending the historic production of Clarice Cliff wares. In October 1972, Clarice died at home in Chetwynd House, Clayton, Staffordshire
