chinese wucai baluster vase, shunzhi or early kangxi

An attractive Chinese baluster vase of a good size, decorated with underglaze blue and overglaze enamels in the wucai palette of underglaze blue with overglaze red, green and yellow enamels, and dating from the second half of the Seventeenth Century. The vase is decorated around the rim with a band of green and red leaves. The body of the vase is profusely and colourfully decorated with two lion dogs amidst scrolling foliage and peony flowers. Height 18.5cm (7.3”)

    Dating: Shunzhi or Kangxi (1644 - 1700)
The vase has a hole in the base, and a small firing flaw at the rim. It also has a curious circular repair to the surface. This does not go right through the body – it is a repair to the surface only. The repair has been done by inserting a piece from another similarly-enamelled item. It is possible that this might have been done in China before exporting. The vase leans very slightly to one side (see images). There is the expected light wear to the enamels.
Despite these flaws, this vase displays well as can be seen in our pictures.
