    chinese late ming phoenix and lotus bowl

    A Chinese shallow bowl, thinly potted and translucent, decorated in underglaze blue, and dating from the late Ming period Wanli or Tianqi c 1600 - 1620. The centre of the bowl is boldly decorated with a flying phoenix and a flowering lotus plant with seed pod. The curved side of the bowl is decorated with Iris and other water plants. The outside of the bowl is decorated with three circles, and with insects flying between. The base of the bowl is unglazed and shows chatter marks. Diameter 15.5cm (6.1"), height 5.3 cm (2.1”).

    This bowl is in very good condition. There are two tiny chips and some ‘pinhole’ glaze fritting around the rim, and two glaze flaws on the outside of the bowl (see images)
