    chinese famille verte saucer, hare & moon mark, kangxi

    A charming Chinese saucer with petal-shaped and brown-dressed rim, decorated with famille vert enamels of overglaze blue, green, yellow and red and with black outlines, and dating from the Kangxi period. The front of the saucer is decorated with two fans surrounded by precious objects. One fan is decorated with a man in a garden, and the other with a vase of flowers. The back of the saucer is decorated under the rim with further precious objects. The foot has an underglaze blue Mark of a hare gazing at the moon. Diameter 11.7cm (4.6").

     
    The hare has been associated with the moon in Chinese tradition for a very long time. In Daoism the hare was associated with the moon goddess Chang e who is said to live on the moon with her companion the hare who prepares the sacred herbs for immortality.

    Condition:
     
    This saucer is in excellent, undamaged condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. As can be seen from the images, the enamels are also in good condition.
