chinese export sparrow beak cream jug with dutch 'amsterdams bont' decoration, yongzheng

An attractive Chinese export sparrow beak cream jug, originally decorated in underglaze blue, and dating from the Yongzheng period. When imported the jug was decorated in underglaze blue with three flower head roundels, and with bands of diaper pattern at the rim and foot. This was then over-decorated in the Netherlands with baskets of flowers, and with a row of flower heads around the foot. A bird of paradise has also been added within the handle, together with flowers and a banded hedge. The decoration around the foot and the bird are in a style reminiscent of both the famille verte and kakiemon palettes, and probably date the decoration to the Yongzheng period. Height 10.8cm (4.2").

From the collection of Helen Espir, author of the standard work ‘European Decoration on Oriental Porcelain, 1700-1830’.
    Dating: Yongzheng c 1730
This jug is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks or restoration. The jug would originally have had a lid, now missing.
