chinese blue and white dish with later silver handle, kangxi

An attractive Chinese dish with later silver handle, decorated in underglaze blue, and dating from the Kangxi period. The dish is decorated in the centre with a scene of five scholars studying a scroll with a yin-yang symbol drawn on it. Around the edge are the 8 precious objects alternating with the 8 trigrams (ba gua). The reverse of the dish is also attractively decorated with breaking waves around the rim, and with a 6-character Chenghua mark to the base. Diameter 16.7 cm (6.6")

The handle is attractively shaped and decorated with chased floral scrolls and areas of fine square dot pattern. The handle is not marked as far as I can see, but tests as silver.

    Dating: Kangxi c 1690 - 1710

    Condition:

This dish has three hairline cracks, two from the rim and one from on of the handles, and a small and shallow chip at the rim together with a little light rim fritting. There is a firing flaw in the base which does not extend through to the front of the dish. Despite these faults this is an attractive Kangxi dish which displays well.
