Antique Antique Russian Gilt Bronze Rock Crystal Sleigh Sculpture Inkwell C 1840

This exceptional Russian ormolu and rock crystal encrier inkwell dates from circa 1840.

The omolu inkwell is modelled as an overflowing barrel on a sled. The pan cover lifts off using the central handle and it is pierced for pounce. Pounceis a finepowder, most often made frompowderedcuttlefish bone, that was used both to dry ink and to sprinkle on a rough writing surface to make it smooth enough for writing

The ormolu sled sits on a strking rock crystal base, with polished top and rough hewn edges to simulates ice.

This unusual piece is highly collectable and decorative.

Rock crystal's name is derived from the Greek word 'krustallos' meaning 'ice,' because the Greeks, finding it in caves near Mount Olympus, believed it to be water which had been permanently frozen by the gods.

The finest rock crystal is from the Hot Springs area of Arkansas. It is also sourced in Cumberland, Switzerland, Brazil and Madagascar. Some of the largest individual crystals of quartz have been found in Brazil.
