Antique A Leaf from L’Histoire Du Vieux Et Du Nouveau Testament By Nicholas Fontaine (Pseudonymn:Sieur de Royaumont)

Nicolas Fontaine (1625-1709) was a French theologian, translator and poet. He composed the History of the Old and New Testament with the help of his friend Louis-Isaac Lemaistre de Sacy while the two were imprisoned in the Bastille. He was arrested for heresy and wrote this book while imprisoned.

This leaf references the story of Elisha, a prophet. He was a servant of the Moabite king at a time when they were being attacked. Elisha agreed to ask for the help of God. As a result, the Moabite king was able to drive out the invaders. When a group of boys from Bethel taunted the prophet for his baldness, Elisha cursed them in the name of Yahweh and two female bears came out of the forest and attacked the boys. This story appears in Second Kings.
