#10230 a small rare victorian despatch box – commissioners of railways.

A Small and Extremely Rare Victorian Black Morocco Leather Despatch Box, just 29.5 cm long, the bevelled top bearing the royal insignia of Queen Victoria with a swing handle and 'COMMISSIONERS OF RAILWAYS'* in gilt lettering. The interior with raised sides retains its original green velvet lining. The Bramah Crown Patent lock is stamped S. MORDAN MAKERS, and has its original key.

The "Commissioners of Railways" refers to various bodies established throughout the 19th century in the UK to oversee and regulate the railway industry. Initially, these were established as the Railway Commission in 1873, evolving into the Railway and Canal Commission in 1888, and ultimately abolished in 1949. Their primary function was to address issues related to railway charges, facilities, and other matters concerning railway and canal companies.
