Originally the property of Prince Frederick, Duke of York & Albany, the second son of King George III, an important Late 18th / Early 19th Century three handled Despatch Box embossed H.R.H. COMMANDER IN CHIEF, the lock stamped Davis's Patent with George III's Crown. The green velvet lining the interior is almost certainly original.
H.R.H. Prince Frederick* (b.1763 d.1827) was Commander in Chief of the British Forces in 1795, but was forced to resign in 1809 due to a scandal caused by the activities of his mistress. He was exonerated and served a second term as Commander in Chief between 1811 & 1827. On his death he was succeeded by The Duke of Wellington.
