    Antique Victorian Royal Navy Silver Plated Toast Rack c1850s

    An impressively rare piece of Britain's maritime history in the form of a large electroplated nickel-silver toast rack.

     
    Made for use in an Officers' wardroom, this astonishing piece bears an intersting motif to one side of the handle mount. Believed to have been part of the silver inventory of the Training Squadron arm of the Victorian Royal Navy. These training ships, probably once sailed as part of the fleet in the time of Nelson, were anchored out in Portsmouth and Plymouth sound and used for training the new recruits ready for active service.
    A large piece,capable of holding eight slices of toast. This fine example was made by Elkington & Company in Birmingham and is easily dated by the date-letter coding that it bears to 1850.
    A very early piece from this most important of all English makers', the first recorded pieces date from c1841, only nine years earlier!
