An Edwardian ruby and diamond ring with a stunningly intricate scrollwork head. Crafted in 1903, this ring has plenty of antique charm and detailing, but the star of the show is the lustrous gemstones that sit within the scrollwork head. Three oval mixed-cut rubies and two round mixed-cut rubies of a deep purplish red colour are arranged on a diagonal at this ring's heart, graduating down in size from the shimmering central stone. Bordered by 18ct gold detailing, either side of the rubies sit five diamonds, a mixture of old mine cut and table cut; two cuts not often seen in this day and age. The swirls of antique old-cut diamonds curve around a final round mixed-cut ruby, completing each side of the head beautifully. The wonderful mixture of gemstone cuts held within this ring makes it a truly captivating piece, with something new to see at each glance.
Detailing like this was at the height of fashion in the Edwardian era, with openwork, filigree, and lace-like patterns commonly seen adorning both clothing and jewellery. The era's styles were heavily influenced by Rococo grandeur and 18th-century opulence, with King Edward VII at the helm, his love of luxury and excess setting the tone.
The detailed head of this ring is framed by simplistic shoulders, leading to a plain, polished yellow gold band, allowing the stones and swirling gold borders of the head to take centre stage. Inside the band, a hallmark for 18ct gold. The anchor stamp for the Assay Office of Birmingham is clear, next to the date letter 'd', telling us this ring was hallmarked in 1903 to 1904. A maker's mark sits to the left of this hallmark, though it has been worn over time after frequent wear and is no longer as legible as it once was.
