the antique 18ct gold opal toi et moi ring

A fantastic opal toi et moi ring, a design with a hidden romantic meaning, circa the early 20th century. This stunning ring holds two stunning round opal cabochons with a fantastic play of colour. The opals come to life when light hits, displaying blue, green and some red across their domed tops. The opals have been worn slightly over time, but their slight imperfections add character after around 100 years of love and wear. The stunning gemstones are complemented by white metal, claw set in Rex Gallery collets, contrasting with yellow under bezels and a yellow gold band.
The toi et moi arrangement has served as an engagement ring since Napoleon's proposal to Josephine de Beauharnais in 1796 with a toi et moi ring set with a pear-shaped sapphire and a pear-shaped diamond on a slim gold band. Derived from the French "You and Me", each stone is said to symbolise one person in the relationship, coming together as a couple.
The shoulders are neat, slimming down slightly into a plain yellow gold band with a polished finish. Though not hallmarked, this ring is stamped '18ct', and has been assessed and tested by an expert to confirm that it is crafted from 18ct gold.
