This is a folk rendering in wood of Quan Yin, the Goddess of Compassion, and she is one of the most popular deities in all of Asia. You will find images of Quan Yin not only at Buddhist temples, but also in Taoist and Confucian temples. The name in Chinese roughly translates as "The One Who Hears the Cries of the World." This image is executed in a charming folk style. Traces of gold leaf remain at the face and neck. Vietnam, 19th century.
