    Antique William Bailey Turret Clock

    This remarkable clock was made in 1871 by William Bailey, a famous maker of 'Turret' clocks. of Albion Works, Oldfield Road, Salford, Manchester (1914), and later of Albion Works, Patricroft.
    In 1832 John Bailey began work with Cocker and Higgins, then Sharp, Roberts and Co. By 1839 John Bailey went into business for himself and established at Albion Works, Oldfield Road, presumably as J. Bailey and Co. In 1863, John Bailey and Co, turret clock makers, brass founders, steam and water gauge makers, copying press makers, of Albion Clock and Brass Works, 9 Essex St, Oldfield Road, Salford and Goree Piazza, Liverpool. By 1865 John's son William inherited his father's business at Albion Works after John Bailey retired. Business then manufactured steam pumps, ram pumps, regulating valves, pyrometers, barometers, fire engines, tide recorders, gas jet motors, lubricators & turnstiles.     1879 Company classified as machinery hand and strapping manufacturers of Albion Works, Oldfield Road, Salford; advertised as hydraulic engineers, brass founders, valve and gauge makers, water engines; turret clock and lightning conductor manufacturers; lifts, hoists, steam pumps, injectors, and boiler fittings

     
    1888 Issued catalogue of steam and water fittings, including pressure gauges, steam and water valves, safety and relief valves, sluice valves, fire fittings, fusible plugs, injectors and feed pumps, steam traps, pyrometers, thermometers etc manufactured by themselves (W. H. Bailey of Salford)
    1889 Private company formed as W. H. Bailey & Co. Ltd.
    1890 Alfred John Bailey (son of William Bailey) joined the company.
    1891 Took over the former works of Uriah Nichols for the production of Bailey-Friedrich steam motors, which comprised engine, boiler, condenser, etc as one unit on a bedplate.
    1894 Catalogue of pumps and hydraulic machinery (W. H. Bailey and Co of Albion Ironworks, Salford).
    1894 William H. Bailey was knighted.
    These turret clocks were installed in churches and public buildings. It has no dial or hands as these were mounted on the outside of the building and lost when the clock was removed. Made with a very accurate escapement, fitted with a wooden pendulum and driven by two weights, this clock stands as a testament to the quality of Victorian horological engineering. Height: 5 feet, 10 inches.
