Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich, German painter born in Weimar October 30, 1712 and died in Dresden on April 24, 1774. Pupil of the painter of the King of Poland, Alexander Thiele in Dresden for three years, Dietrich performs then a trip to Holland, where he returned in 1735. In 1737 he went to Weimar and Braunschwerg, where he painted a Crucifixion for the church in that city. Back in Dresden in 1741, he was appointed court painter to King Augustus III. In 1743, he made a study trip to Italy, via Venice and Rome. In 1748, he was appointed Inspector of the Gallery of Dresden and in 1764 Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, he will never leave Dresden until his death. We find in his works echo these trips since his style, very electric, also reflects the influence of Rembrandt and the Dutch masters of the seventeenth century, as Italian as Salvatore Rosa, Locatelli Italianate and Flemish such as Berchem and Poelenburg. The subject of oriental portrait is very recurrent in the production of the painter, we know many museums and private collections.
