    ??? Subject & Medium

Experience the captivating intensity of the British countryside through this compelling oil on board by renowned Victorian animal artist Edward Aistrop. Painted circa 1880, the scene unfolds within the shadows of a rustic barn, where two alert Jack Russell Terriers—one black and white, the other brown and white—are locked in a tense moment of pursuit. One dog is transfixed on a cornered rat, while the other sharply turns its gaze, alerted to a second unseen threat in the shadows. The rat, frozen and staring upward, adds an electrifying sense of suspense.

This emotionally charged composition is protected behind a front glass cover and housed in a traditional wood frame, later painted black. A powerful depiction of instinct, intelligence, and the countryside spirit of the late Victorian era.

    ?? Composition & Technique

Aistrop’s composition is a triumph of storytelling and realism. The interaction between the terriers and the trapped rat forms a tense triangular arrangement that naturally draws the viewer’s eye into the heart of the narrative.

Rendered in a palette of earthy browns, soft straw golds, and dusky greys, the barn setting fades subtly into the background, allowing the crisp whites and tans of the terriers’ coats to shine. Aistrop’s confident brushwork captures the alert musculature and expressive features of the dogs with exceptional detail, while the looser background strokes add texture and atmosphere.

Delicate use of light and shadow heightens the drama: subtle highlights on the animals’ fur give depth and realism, while soft shadowing enhances the three-dimensional feel of the composition. The result is a striking balance of painterly texture and naturalistic form — a hallmark of Aistrop’s refined technique.

    ?? Signed by the Artist

The piece is signed “Edward Aistrop” in the lower corner, confirming its authenticity and value as a work by a recognized master of his field.

    ????? About Edward Aistrop

Edward Aistrop was a distinguished British animal painter active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Celebrated for his lifelike depictions of domestic animals, particularly dogs, Aistrop was regularly commissioned to paint prized pets and hunting companions. His ability to capture individual personality and momentary expression made his work especially prized.

Today, Aistrop’s works remain highly sought-after, with pieces appearing at major auctions and exhibitions. His top-selling painting, a study of a pug, achieved $8,219 USD at Christie’s, a testament to his ongoing market appeal. Paintings like Rat Trapped exemplify his signature style: intimate, dynamic, and full of emotional resonance.

    ??? Framing

The artwork is set in a recently fitted Larson Juhl gilt scoop frame, crafted in richly detailed gold leaf wood. The ornate design is perfectly in keeping with the Victorian subject matter, adding elegance and depth to the presentation.
