Antique Samurai Scroll in Honor of Oda Nobunaga

The butterfly motif suggests this scroll pays homage to Oda Nobunaga. He was a warlord and unifier. Nobunaga is said to have used seven crests during his lifetime. Among these were the Ageha-cho, a swallowtail butterfly which appears on this scroll.

Oda Nobunaga lived 1534 until 1582 and was a leading warlord. He is regarded as the first "Great Unifier" of Japan. His reputation in war gave him the nickname of "Demon Daimyo" or "Demon King".

Nobunaga was head of the very powerful Oda clan, and launched a war against other groups. He left a legacy as an innovator in military techniques, a promoter of free trade and a reformer of Japan's civil government.

But the legacy also includes brutal suppression of opponents and eliminating those who refused to cooperate or yield to his demands. Still, he is regarded as one of three great unifiers.

The painting is in very good condition. Some flaying at the edges and minor staining.
