This wearable Roman ring dates from around 300 AD. It tests as high-carat gold - as is evident from the wonderful butter-yellow colour - with a hollow shank, slightly oval as is usual at this period, and set with a mottled greenish agate cameo of Demeter, or Ceres, the goddess of farming and agriculture. She is shown seated, holding a wheat-ear. The rub-over setting of the intaglio is decorated with a band of beading round its base, and a triangle of beads on each shoulder. The hollow shank has some denting, as one would expect, but the ring generally is in excellent ondition, and wearable. The finger size is approximately L-UK, or 5 3/4 US, but would fit a slightly larger finger size as it is not entirely round.
