Antique Pair of French Nineteenth century Limoges enamel vases, signed Vibert

A pair of Limoges vases enamel on cooper with a emerald green background and gold highlights with a gadrooned stylized leaf and flowered branches pattern on the col and the pedestal. The body of the vases and the lower collar are decorated with a gallant scene showing two characters dressed in the eighteenth century style on a countryside backdrop. On one of the vase, a woman wearing a loose blue dress, holding her fan, watches the young man on the second vase showing her a letter. This topic is characteristic of the gallant eighteenth century repertory, showing elegant, graceful characters conversing and seduce. At the same time, it reflects the contemporary taste for countryside, an ideal place for quiet moments, in communion with nature. This pair of vases is signed VIBERT.

The second half of the 19th century was the golden age of Limoges porcelain. The factories were in full possession of technical expertise that allowed them to establish their reputation for about fifty years. The leaders of these factories affirmed their personality and their tastes, and asked regularly for the expertise of famous artists mainly coming from the capital city. Moreover, the Universal Exhibitions constituted an important asset to acquire a rapid and efficient recognition. In decoration, historicism was de rigueur, this return to the past borrows many references to the Eighteenth century and this pair of vases is a fine example.
