Antique Painting on Cloth: Buddha, Monkey and Elephant

This painting on cloth is from Cambodia. It recounts the story of the Buddha, a monkey and an elephant (named Parileyyaka).

The Buddha had gone to Parileyya Forest to bring peace between two quarrelling factions of disciples. At this time, he was fed by the monkey and elephant. The monkey offered a honeycomb and the elephant offered fruit. The monkey was so excited when the Buddha accepted his gift that he began leaping from tree to tree and fell to his death. However, he was immediately reborn in Tavatimsa heaven as a result of his generosity.

Some tears in the cloth and fading but the piece retains its beauty and charm.
