Very large Meiji Period Japanese Imari or Arita charger c1880. Uncommonly decorated with three floral panels depicting chrysanthemums separated by gilded panels with exotic birds. Painted in traditional Imari colours with gilt over-glaze. Traditional cobalt blue under-glaze decoration to its underside with red overglaze detail. This charger is a good example of the porcelain ware that was made for export during the Meiji period. It has an unglazed foot and imprints on its underside from supports used during firing. Ground has a blue tint. Typically unmarked. This charger measures 47 cm in diameter and 5.5 cm in height.
This charger is in very good original condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. Some wear to the applied gold enamel commensurate with age. Minor firing flaws to glaze from original and minor crazing to underside. Please see images as these form an important part of the description.
