Ware Hare Challenger” – Royal Academy Exhibited Oil Painting by James Albert Buchanan Jay (c.1880)

Victorian Fox Hunting Scene | Original Equestrian Oil on Canvas | Museum-Quality Sporting Art

    Description
Offered for sale is a rare and exceptional original oil painting titled “Ware Hare Challenger”, painted circa 1880 by the British sporting artist James Albert Buchanan Jay (1838–1888). This large-scale work is a prime example of Victorian equestrian art and was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1880 (Catalogue No. 292).

Painted with remarkable narrative energy and anatomical precision, the scene captures the height of a traditional English fox hunt, unfolding on the grounds of Norwood House, Beverley, Yorkshire.

    Subject & Composition
The central figure—a huntsman clad in a vivid red coat—leads the charge on a powerful black steed, his whip raised mid-strike. A lively pack of hounds bursts through the wooded edge, their motion vividly captured with lifelike detail. Behind them, fellow riders gather at a distant gate, creating depth and anticipation.

Set beneath a softly lit sky in tones of grey and blue, the work balances naturalistic landscape with dramatic action. The contrast between the vivid hunting attire and the subdued woodland surroundings adds visual impact and storytelling depth.

Jay’s technique combines expressive brushwork in the landscape with finely rendered figures and horses, demonstrating both artistic skill and deep familiarity with rural sporting life.

    Artist Biography
James Albert Buchanan Jay was a Royal Academy-trained artist known for equestrian and sporting subjects. Born into the landed gentry of Herefordshire, Jay’s upbringing immersed him in country life—a subject he portrayed with authenticity and vigor. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and Walker Art Gallery, and later travelled to Australia for racehorse commissions. His works are scarce and sought after by collectors of Victorian sporting art.
