Herring moved to Kent in 1853, where spent his time as a country squire, painting sporting works of hunting, racing, and shooting, as well as agricultural scenes and narrative pictures. Herring was a highly successful and prolific artist, who ranked, along with Sir Edwin Landseer, as one of the most eminent animal painter of mid-nineteenth century Europe. He exhibited at the Royal Academy of Fine Art from 1818 to 1865; the British Institute from 1830 to 1852; and the Society of British Artists in 1836 to 1852, where he was the Vice-P
