    gilt bronze and sienna marble gothic revival inkwell

    Oval gilt bronze inkwell in neo-Gothic style, decorated with cathedral arcades and rosettes, with two ink buckets with their lids, one central sand bucket decorated with openwork branches and four pen holder. The inkwell rests on a rectangular Sienna marble base.


    In the early nineteenth century, the Romantic mouvement promoted the Middle Ages vocabulary. The Genius of Christianity of Chateaubriand (1802), Cathedral Antiquitues by J. Britten or Notre-Dame de Paris, the famous novel of Victor Hugo published in 1831, as the influence of Gothic Revival accentuate this process. Thus, from the reign of Charles X, the medieval style spread throughout France and is reflected in painting as in the decoration and the shape of numerous decorative objects adorned with arcades, portals, buttresses, clover other neo-Gothic patterns.
