Antique Gilt Panel of a Deity Upon a Tortoise

The center point of this panel is a deity upon the tortoise, one of the Animals of Supernatural Power. The shell represents the double symbol of Heaven and Earth. Its oval and convex shell represents the vault of heaven, while the square plaque on its underside symbolizes the surface of the Earth.

The tortoise is the emblem of longevity and perfection. The tortoise is believed to live ten thousand years. It’s presence is the wish, “May you be remembered for one thousand years.’’

The deity holds an ambrosia bottle, itself a symbol of longevity.
