Antique French Ebony Striking Carriage Clock by Henry Marc, Paris c1850

A French striking carriage clock by Henry Marc c1850. The clock is in a rectangular ebony veneered on oak case with moulded plinth and five bevelled glass panels. Brass rolling pin style handle with shaped up-rights. Gilt engraved mask surrounding a signed white enamelled dial with black Roman numerals and minute ring. Blued-steel moon hands. Twin-barrel 8-day movement with original engraved lever escapement of unusual form. (Escape-wheel situated behind the balance-wheel – consequently the time regulating lever acts contrary to normal.) Striking the hours and half hour on a bell with external count-wheel. Dial signed Hy Marc, Paris. Backplate stamped Hy Marc Paris and serial number 18093. The clock measures 17 cm to top of handle, maximum width is 10.5 cm and depth 8.5 cm. Excellent timekeeper. Watch a short video of it striking (on our website). Fully cleaned and serviced. The clock's movement is covered by our 12-month warranty within the UK.
This carriage clock is in overall excellent condition commensurate with age. Dial and glass panels are all in perfect undamaged condition. Case with exceptionally minor signs of age. In perfect working order. Please see images as these form an important part of the description.

Henry Marc was a clockmaker and retailer known to be working in Paris from the early part of the 19th century – listed as early as 1800 as a clockmaker and manufacturer. The firm were clockmakers, case-makers and also retailers – often incorporating other maker's movements into cases made by themselves. Little survives of the firm’s history except the many mantel and carriage clocks bearing their name. It is likely that they were primarily retailers by the end of the 19th century. Clocks by Henry Marc are found in the V&A and Royal Collections.
