16 cm wide9 cm deep Sir Stanley Matthews, CBE (1 February 1915 ? 23 February 2000) was an English footballer. Matthews'' nicknames included The Wizard of the Dribble and The Magician. A vegetarian teetotaller, he kept fit enough to play at the top level until he was 50 years old. He was also the oldest player ever to play in England''s top football division and the oldest player ever to represent the country. He played his final competitive game in 1985, at the age of 70. Sometimes called by the French name of ''cire perdue'' or the Latin, ''cera perduta'' is the process by which a bronze or brass is cast from an artist''s sculpture.

In industrial uses, the modern process is called investment casting. An ancient practice, the process today varies from foundry to foundry, but the steps which are usually used in casting small bronze sculptures in a modern bronze foundry are generally quite standardised.
