Antique Cylinder Seal of Master of Animals

3 cm high

A steatite cylinder seal. At center between contesting beasts is the Master of Animals or Lord of Animals. This is a common motif on seals from the Near East. The confronting beasts are fantastical and the Master appears to have some animal elements. Interpretations of the motif vary although the central figure is typically described as a hero with divine attributes.

Purchased from a dealer in Afghanistan between 2011-2014 when I was assigned to work at the NATO base (at Kabul International Airport).
