This bronze is a 19th century edition of the famous model in marble realised between 1685 and 1686 by the French artist Antoine Coysevox (1640-1720), the favorite sculptor of the King and of Hardouin-Mansart. He executed for Versailles many sculptures inspired by the Baroque and antique styles as, for exemple, the two marble replicas of "Crouching Venus" and "Venus with a shell". Today, the original marble in the Louvre Museum was relpaced at Versailles by a bronze replica. Our model is resting on a yellow Sienna marble base decorated with patinated bronze foliage. The front feet are decorated with acanthus leaves and stylized flowers.
