ITEM 1466 DESCRIPTION
A bronze-dore, ships-wheel quartz wall timepiece, and lithograph transfer print of HM Bounty.
Mounted on a stained oak board shaped like the vessel and retailed by Atz-Kunst in Germany, circa 1980.
This is a circa 1980 piece of wall art that has two mountings on a shaped stained oak board mounted on a wall.
The shape of the board is similar to the outline of the HM ship Bounty.
The piece measures 40cm x 20.5cm x 2.0cm and mounted on the board is a rectilinear piece of brass alloy imprinted with a lithograph transfer of an image of the original ship HM Bounty at sea with mast sails being unfurled.
This part of the design is marked 'Bounty' for the ship but not signed by the artist.
Below is a gilt-polished Dore metal timepiece shaped like the wheel of a ship with eight spokes, the rear flange screwed to the wooden board.
The white enameled dial has a Roman hour chapter, closed minute track, steel Spade hands, and center seconds with the dial marked, 'Atz-Kunst (etched art), quartz, made in Germany'.
The timepiece is powered by a German quartz movement with a single battery with the case marked as being made in West Germany (pre-1989).
HMS Bounty, also known in the 18th century as HM Armed Vessel Bounty, was a small merchant vessel that the Royal Navy purchased for a botanical mission.
The ship was sent to the Pacific Ocean under the command of William Bligh to acquire breadfruit plants and transport them to British possessions in the West Indies.
That mission was never completed owing to a mutiny led by acting lieutenant Fletcher Christian.
This incident is now popularly known as the Mutiny on the Bounty. The mutineers later burned Bounty while she was moored at Pitcairn Island.
An American adventurer rediscovered the remains of the Bounty in 1957; various parts of it have been salvaged since then.
