In this nicely embroidered piece, we find the Eight Immortals above, each with the symbol which identifies him. Each of the Eight Immortals has a particular power able to bestow life or destroy evil. Collectively, the Eight Immortals are considered to be signs of prosperity and longevity and this accounts for their popularity in art. Usually they are depicted together although they can appear alone if the wish is to give more homage to that specific immortal. On the panel below are guardian lions. A larger, presumably male, lion is surrounded by four other lions with eyes made from glass. The item also includes circular reflective metal pieces. 19th century. Sino-Viet, Vietnam
