This is an exquisite antique Edwardian mahogany bureau, circa 1900 in date. This elegant bureau will soon become the centrepiece of your furniture collection and can suitably house your most valued collectibles. There is no mistaking the sophisticated quality and design of this bureau as it is finished all round and is freestanding. It is sure to receive the maximum amount of attention wherever it is placed in your home. It bears the mark of Maple & Co the renowned furniture retailer of London, Paris and Buenos Aires, who were famous for top quality furniture. They were by Royal Appointment and were one of the leading furniture manufacturers of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. They used only the finest quality timber which they imported directly from all over the world. They had premises in Tottenham Court Road in London, until the 1980s. Their furniture was sold to Embassies, hotels, palaces and beautiful homes all over the world. This bureau is beautifully crafted from flame mahogany and is masterfully inlaid all around. The design is simple to highlight the beautiful grain of the wood. The fall front writing slope conceals a beautiful interior which contains 3 smal drawers and the original gold tooled green leather writing surface. 18th century furniture designer, Thomas Sheraton, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany." The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree. This bureau is certain to enhance the style and class of any living area, bedroom, hallway or reception. Measurements: Height: 92 cm x Width: 76 cm x Depth: 48 cm Condition: This antique bureau is in really excellent condition and has been very well cared for. It is all original including the brass handles and castors. Please see photographs to confirm condition.
