This is a beautiful Edwardian, Circa 1900 in date, mahogany and inlaid writing table. It is offered in truly excellent condition. The top has it''s original coral leather with tooled decoration. It has it''s original brass handles and castors. There are five useful drawers below. The top has a shelf with two drawers at either end, the flaps above reveal storage for letters, stamps, etc.The crossbanded inlaid decoration was masterfully executed by a true craftsman, and the flame mahogany veneers are exquisite.18th century furniture designer, Thomas Sheraton, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany."The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree. This is a jewel of a writing table and would probably have been in a ladies boudoir.Measurements:Height 103 cm x Width 108 cm x Depth 56cm Condition:In superb original condition.
