    Adrian Heath (c.1965)

“Form in Motion” – Signed Abstract Watercolour Masterpiece
A Defining Work by a Leading Voice in British Postwar Abstraction

    Subject & Medium
“Form in Motion” is an exceptional, signed abstract watercolour by acclaimed British modernist Adrian Heath (1920–1992), dated 1965. Created during the height of Heath’s mature period, the piece reflects his signature exploration of spatial tension, dynamic form, and lyrical geometry—hallmarks of his lifelong engagement with abstraction.

Executed in watercolour on paper, this original work is a compelling demonstration of Heath’s mastery in a more intimate and expressive format than his larger canvases, offering collectors a rare glimpse into his creative process at its most fluid and intuitive.

    Composition & Technique
This composition pulses with momentum and structure—intersecting lines, diagonals, and angular forms generate a rhythmic sense of motion and depth. Fully abstract yet richly suggestive, it recalls elements of architectural structures, human silhouettes, or kinetic energy in flux.

    Palette Highlights:

Warm ochres & earthy siennas ground the composition in natural richness
Slate blues & steel greys introduce cool tonal contrast
Charcoal blacks lend visual weight and definition
Creams & ivories lift the work with atmospheric luminosity
    Technique:

Layered transparent washes create subtle depth and tonal variation
Dry-brush applications & crisp edges provide clarity and form
Gestural flourishes animate the surface with expressive energy
The result is a vibrant, harmonized composition—analytical yet emotive, balanced yet boldly dynamic. Heath’s Constructivist training meets his intuitive sense of rhythm in this captivating work on paper.

    Signed & Dated
Signed "Heath '65" in the lower right, this piece is fully authenticated and firmly placed within one of the most important periods of his artistic career.

About the Artist – Adrian Heath (1920–1992)
One of the foremost figures in British postwar abstraction, Heath was a pioneering force in geometric modernism.

Trained at the Slade School of Fine Art, interrupted by WWII service and imprisonment in Stalag Luft III—where he famously encouraged fellow POW Terry Frost to pursue art.
Influenced by European abstractionists such as Jean Hélion and Victor Pasmore, Heath helped shape British Constructivism with a uniquely lyrical approach.
Regular exhibitor at the Redfern Gallery, participant in the 1951 Festival of Britain, and contributor to the landmark 1956 This is Tomorrow exhibition.
His work is held in major institutions, including Tate, Arts Council Collection, and British Council.
Author of Abstract Art: Its Origins and Meaning (1953), a key theoretical text on modernist principles.

    Presentation & Frame
Professionally mounted and floated within a natural wood frame with a sleek, modern profile. The framing enhances the work’s visual clarity and depth while protecting it for future enjoyment.
