Antique ARTS AND CRAFTS , GLASS COLOURED AND MAHOGANY FIRE SCREEN

Charming Arts and Crafts leaded and glass coloured fire screen, depicting a galleon in full sail, with a plain mahogany frame, extending to down swept supports, applied with a brass loop handle to the top rail.
The fire screen is in good antique condition and due to it's previous use unsurprisingly has minor cracks to some of the glass pieces (none are loose) together with some minor historical scuff and knocks to the frame commensurate with age.

The Arts and Craft movement (1850-1915) was led by Willian Morris (1835-1896) in the UK.
It was inspired by nature and was often very decorative.
It had an emphasis on the use of high quality materials and craftmanship. The products were only really available for the wealthy, much of the work was inspired by the writings of John Ruskin and it was at its height between 1880 and 1910.
The Arts and Crafts movement influenced British and American architecture, decorative arts, cabinet making, crafts, and even garden designs.
It's best know practitioners were William Morris, Charles Robert Ashbee, T.J. Cobden Sanderson and Walter Crane.
These people considered the machine to be the cause of all repetitive and mundane evils, some of the members of this movement turned entirely away from the use of machines and towards handicraft, using basic tools.
The movement was born out of an understanding that society needed to adopt a different set of priorities in relation to the manufacture of objects.
It's leaders wanted to develop products that not only had more integrity but which were also made in a less dehumanising way.
