A rare 18th century commemorative, cast iron, French fireback, dating to 1702. Depicting people in period dress greeting one another amid a scene under a scrolled banner with wording. the wording reads,
'Le duc du roy d'espagne auec le roy de la France' or, in English,
'The duke of the king of Spain with the King of France' and relates to Louis XIV of france meeting said duke to arrange the succession of the Spanish throne, the arrangement consequently leading to the War of the Spanish succession with the Duke of Marlborough, Battle of Blenheim, etc!
The fireback weighs an absolute ton,( not literally, but two grown men seems to struggle with it whenever its been moved!) being cast iron, and has been used for much if not all of its life. It has the obvious wear from heat, rust, ash, etc and is a very attarctive and characterful piece that looks great in situ.
