Antique A group in biscuit after "Alliance" or "Hymen" by Louis-simon Boizot, Samson manufactory

A group in biscuit depicting the young Charles Philippe, Comte d’Artois and Marie Thérèse de Savoie seated side by side. Behind the couple, Hymen, god of marriage, apply a torch on two hearts resting on the altar of love. On the right side, two Cupids playing with quivers and behind the altar, a pair of doves pecking. The two historical characters are idealized, the scene become thus an universal allegory of love and marriage. Apocryphal Sèvres mark incised under the base : two "L" interlaced and "C 1". Realized by Samson manufactory.

The marriage of Charles Philippe de France, Comte d’Artois, brother of Louis XVI anf futur Charles X with Marie Thérèse de Savoie, third daughter of Vittorio Amadeo III, King of Sardinia, took place on 16th November 1773 at Versailles. Three days earlier, the sculptor Louis Simon Boizot, named that same year head of the sculpture workshop at Sèvres manufactory, presented to Comte d’Artois a new model of a biscuit group called "L’Alliance" or "L’Hymen". Our biscuit groupe is a 19th century edition after the original model realised by Boizot. Created in 1845 by Edme Samson (1810-1891), Samson manufactory was highly specialized in the reproduction of Chinese and Japan ceramics, but also Rouen, Marseille, Strasbourg and Sèvres faiences, enjoying a great success amongst the rapidly increasing bourgeoisie. However, Samson addressed to a luxury clientele, French and foreign, as for exemple Henry Ford II, Douglas Dillon and Agnelli.
