Gilt bronze Romantic mantel clock. The dial with Roman numerals is surmounted by a graceful Chinese contemplating a bird. The base is decorated with a scene in bas-relief representing an Oriental musician playing the pipa, a traditional music instrument, in a landscape of rocks, pagodas, birds and palm trees on a matte ground. The lower part is adorned with bells and butterflies. The front legs are shaped with dragons. Original movement with a thread in working condition.
In the eighteenth century, the Far East fascinated the Western world, and everything that comes from those territories was widely admired and imitated. In France, the movement grew during the reign of Louis XV, giving birth to many pieces of furniture and objects "in the style of China." The artistic interpretations are full of imagination, fantasy and picturesque. On the bronze Louis XV and Louis XVI pendula appear multiple Chineses and a whole vocabulary finding its inspiration in various exotic sources. Our pendulum reflects the taste and curiosity of the time regarding the oriental worlds, their people, fauna and flora that do not cease to stimulate the artistes’ imagination throughout the whole nineteenth century.
