Antique A Pair of Purple Opaline Medici Vase

Very elegant and rare pair of amethyst Medici vases. They consist of two gilded bronze pedestal bases, one adorned with diamond patterns, the other finely carved with foliage. The base houses the glass decorated with striated bands, friezes of palmettes and golden scrolls painted with blue flowers and multicolored bouquets of roses. The bellies are decorated with two medallions depicting animal scenes whose subjects are drawn from the Fables of la Fontaine. The decor is realised by / in the workshop / in the taste of? Jean-Baptiste Desvignes. Good condition, light wear to the gilding.

By 1820, technological discoveries brought new features to the opaline objects. At that time, Jean-Baptiste Desvigne found a way to painte the opal crystal and glass. He used only vegetable colours that he glued on the opal crystal. The tones, always dull, were limited to dark blue and red. The gilding dominated, in subtil linear palmettes, flowers and garlands patterns. Desvignes made Gothic decorations. He also run small illustrative scenes inspired by the fables of La Fontaine, delicately coloured in blue, soft green, ocher, purple, with gold or silver stains. The sets by Jean-Baptiste Desvignes subsisted from 1820, approximately, to 1826. Subsequently, his wife and his two collaborators, Vincent and Blancheron, continued under the same recipes and the same reasons, to decorate the opal, made especially, it seems, by the crystal manufactory of Brecy founded in 1827.
