Antique A PAIR OF PELMETS DESIGNED BY SIR EDWIN LUTYENS

A rare opportunity to own a piece of furniture designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.

This pair of pelmets were designed by Lutyens for Papillon Hall, Leicestershire in 1903. They are made from mahogany and have been lacquered. The house was demolished in 1951 and these pelmets have been privately owned ever since, after being rescued from the billiard room, for which they were made.

Papillon Hall was remodelled by Lutyens in 1903 along the lines of Chesters, a house Lutyens admired. Papillon had three principle wings, the salon, the dining room and the billiard room. As items like these would be prohibited from being removed today, this is a very rare example of a piece of furniture by Lutyens becoming available for sale.

Attached is Lutyens plan for the house, with the ‘Own’ Room, being in fact the Billiard Room. Country Life have kindly let use images from their archive of the house before it was demolished.

There is also a large chimneypiece being offered for sale separately, also rescued from this room in 1951.
