Antique A Louis XVI marble and ormolu temple shape mantel clock

A late 18th century white marble and gilt bronze temple shape mantel clock composed of two levels. The first one has the visible movement with double rotating dial, with Roman numerals for hours and Arabic for minutes, painted in black on white enameled cartridges. Four small white marble columns with ormolu Ionic capital and base resting on the circular base with four fluted feet support the dial. In the center, two doves rest on a bow and flowers on an altar. Openwork galleries decorate the circumference of two levels. The set decorated with friezes, garlands of pearls and fluted patterns is surmounted by a pinecone finial. The architectural structure of antique temple and the antiques ornaments are characteristic of this period.

The porticoes clocks are an innovation of Louis XVI period and their number and diversity are considerable. The principle leans on a rational conception originated in the Greek and Roman temple architecture: a base, two or several columns or pilasters, an entablature. The watchmakers of that time associated in their models marble and bronze, the first for the structure and the second for the ornamentation.
