Antique A Janam Patri or Birth Horoscope

    India
    Approximately 17 x 3 m 30 cm
    Late 19th-Early 20th century

This scroll is likely a janam patri or birth almanac. A janampatri is a birth chart prepared according to Vedic Astrology, a particular system of prediction developed by ancient pundits. The purpose of the chart is to foretell the future and cite obstacles that might be faced.

It is a graphical representation of planets at the time of one’s birth. Based on these birth details, a Janampatri, also known as a Kundali, can be prepared to throw light on all astrological prospects of a person’s life from birth to death.Such charts were routinely made at the birth of a child.

It is painted on handmade paper.

At top center is the customary presence of Ganesh who is invoked to remove all obstacles.

There are mathematical charts which represent the two phases of the lunar calendar.

Along each side are numerous gods and deities to help along the road of life.

There is damage (tears, holes) over the decades. This is easily understood taking into account that these scrolls deteriorate easily because of the extreme climate in India and the wear and tear of a horoscope’s daily use.  But this remains a very interesting item.
