a french early 19th century pair of candelabras with caryatids

A pair of Empire bronze and marble candelabras with three lights supported by bronze caryatids with dark brown patination, dressed in long tunics "à l'antique" and leaned at a pillar forming the barrel. The S-shaped ormolu lights decorated with foliages and wreaths, ending with a socket hihgtened with interlace and twisted patterns surround a central branch decorated with lily flowers in patinated bronze. The set rests on a double base adorned with friezes of putti dancing and playing and interlace, raised on a white marble cylindrical base.

Under the first Empire, the simple and elegant forms are inspired by the Antiquity. Cups, vases, ewers have for models Greek and Roman amphoras and urns. A sober decoration joins the pure forms, with typical Empire patterns such as the eagle, snake, lily flower, water leaves and swan. The Empire decorative objects are admired for their rigorous elegance, well-balanced proportions and the elegant design of their ornaments.
