Antique A French Nineteenth century Limoges enamel casket

A fine rectangular Limoges enamel casket with its key and gilt bronze mounts on four curved, rolling-up feet richly decorated with volutes and foliage. The lid is decorated on all its surface with a scene depicting in foreground two characters on a bench in a rural landscape, the man dressed in the taste of the 18th century, slightly tilted to the young farmer, spoiling her in the ear stories or promises concerning the French capital, the name of which is written on the ground: " Paris ". The woman, wisely seated next to him, her hands crossed on the knees, looks dreamy at this word which her companion had just written with his cane, in front of him. At their feet, a sleeping dog and a covered basket. Scenes depicting the same landscape with border of forest, lake and houses on the background decorate the four side faces of the casket. The interior is lined with silk. Some wears to silk.

The second half of the 19th century was the golden age of Limoges porcelain. The factories were in full possession of technical expertise that allowed them to establish their reputation for about fifty years. The leaders of these factories affirmed their personality and their tastes, and asked regularly for the expertise of famous artists mainly coming from the capital city. Moreover, the Universal Exhibitions constituted an important asset to acquire a rapid and efficient recognition. In decoration, historicism was de rigueur, this return to the past borrows many references to the Eighteenth century and this pair of vases is a fine example.
