DESCRIPTION
We are offering for sale this exquisite pair of Victorian pastel portraits of a very well dressed lady and her husband, which have been executed in a masterful way by an unknown artist, whose use of the medium is of the highest level of expertise.

These are probably the best pastels we have ever owned! Unfortunately, when we purchased them, they had been removed from their frames and original backing board, thereby removing any information about the artist that may have been there.
They will, therefore, have to be judged on their merits by any potential purchaser.The lady is seated on a red, buttoned back chair or sofa and is resting her arm on a table covered in similar fabric with a studded and fringed edge. She is wearing a dark grey dress, with black trimmings, which has a cream lace pleated stand up collar and cuffs. She has a locket on a black ribbon around her neck.
Her hair is plaited and piled up on top of her head with an ornament to one side and she is wearing gold drop earrings.
There is a chatelaine hanging from her belt. On the table is a tazza, possibly with a flower arrangement in it and perched upon the very top is a canary.Her husband is seated on a padded roll-back chair and is leaning one arm upon the edge of a table or desk. He is dressed in a black suit with waistcoat and a black cravat with a stud.
There is a gold watch on an albert hanging from his waitcoat.
His hair is quite long and curly and he had a beard and moustache.The fine detail, particularly on the faces of these portraits is quite remarkable and they make a very handsome pair, unlike so many portraits of men and women of this and earlier periods.FRAMES
The pastels are double mounted to complement and are newly framed in a 2" ornate frame which suits them very well. They are ready to hang.MEDIUM
