Antique A Dao Shaman Embroidered Dragon Robe

Mid 20th century, Vietnam.

This embroidered robe, worn by a Yao priest, contains images which reflect Dao beliefs and qualities which reside in the shaman himself.

The front of this robe is decorated with dragons who provide protection. At the bottom are two facing horses, symbols of strength and endurance. The reverse also features dragons and horses.

Mountains are also represented and they are the abodes of important deities, the four great supernatural creatures and the Jade Emperor.

The size of this robe suggests that it may have been made for the child of a shaman.
