Antique 19th Century Oil. After Raphael. 'Madonna della Seggiola'

    After Raphael (Italian, 1483-1520)

A wonderful 19th Century mirror image copy of "Madonna della Seggiola" Oil on canvas.

    Atist; Unknown

An unsigned circular painting, or tondo, in a square frame. Dimensions provided are for the frame. The actual picture size visible within the frame and mount is 29.5cm diameter.

Good condition with expected areas of craquelure given the medium (oil) and age of the painting, this is part of the authenticity and reflects the period and very much commensurate with age. Some evidence of retouching.
The frame is also in good solid condition with some scuffs, knocks and gilt flaking very much commensurate with age.
The painting is ready to hang.

The Madonna della Seggiola or The Madonna della Sedia (71cm diameter and painted in Rome around 1513/14) is an oil Panel Madonna painting by the High Italian Renaissance artist Raphael, and housed at the Palazzo Pitti Collection in Florence, Italy.
Although there is documentation on its arrival to its current location, Palazzo Pitti, it is still unknown who commissioned the painting; however it has been in the Medici family since the 16th century.
The original, once in the Uffizi was seized during the Napoleonic Wars and in Paris between 1799-1815, but is now back in its rightful place.
It depicts Mary as an Italian woman wearing a gypsy scarf tenderly embracing the Christ child while sitting in a chair as a young John the Baptist devoutly watches over.
The Madonna della Sedia is one of the single most important of Raphael's Madonnas.
The painting also showcases Raphael's use of the tondo form and his naturalistic approach to depicting the Madonna.
This scene, is inserted into a circular composition, and the scene appears quite intimate; almost as if the viewer is intruding into the pictorial space, from which Mary is trying to protect her child.
