A French black marble (Belge noir) perpetual calendar clock with moon-phase c1880. Arched case with brass moulding to front, enclosing the two dials. The black stepped clock dial with visible Brocot escapement. Black chapter ring with gilt roman numerals and shaped gilt hands. The perpetual calendar below with stepped dial. Black outer ring with months – the month indicated by a shaped gilt pointer. Finely engraved inner dial with inset painted enamel moon-phase dial and inset black subsidiary dials for days and date, indicated by shaped gilt pointers. Both dials behind bevelled glazed moulded brass bezels. The clock has a twin-barrel 14+ day movement striking the hour and half-hour on a bell. Brass-bob pendulum with working Brocot suspension for fine regulation. Backplate stamped with serial number 457. Unusual perpetual calendar mechanism activated by the strike train after midnight. Fully perpetual registering the correct number of days in each month as well as for leap years. Fully functioning moon-phase indicator. Calendar mechanism backplate stamped C.R within an oval (which we have not been able to identify) and serial number 458. The arched front black marble case with cavetto mouldings to sides and ogee moulding below, above a rectangular plinth flanked by carved side scrolls. The clock measures 46.5 cm in height. Fully cleaned and serviced. The clock and calendar movements are covered by our 12-month warranty in the UK.
This perpetual calendar clock is in excellent condition commensurate with age. Full working clock and calendar mechanism. The black marble case has a number of very minor "fleabites" - significantly more obvious in images than in natural light. Both major dials in perfect condition. Minor cracks to enamel on moon-phase dial. Please see images as these form an important part of the description.
